Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh – June 2025:
In a major political announcement, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has promised to install a golden statue of Emperor Harshvardhan in Kannauj if his party wins the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The announcement was made during a public rally in his home turf of Kannauj, a historically significant city associated with the ancient emperor.
Akhilesh emphasized the legacy of Harshvardhan, who ruled North India in the 7th century and made Kannauj his capital. “We want to revive the glorious past of Kannauj and remind the youth of our rich cultural heritage,” said Yadav. He added that the statue will not only be a tribute but also help promote tourism and boost the local economy.
The bold promise is seen as part of SP’s broader strategy to connect with the pride of Uttar Pradesh’s historical identity and counter the BJP’s narrative. Political analysts say this move may help Akhilesh consolidate votes in the central UP region, where Kannauj holds emotional and historical value.
As the state gears up for the 2027 elections, this announcement has already stirred a political debate, with some calling it a visionary step and others terming it a populist gimmick.
