Charlevoix, Canada — June 16, 2025:
The Group of Seven (G7) summit began today in the scenic region of Charlevoix, Canada, with leaders from the world’s most advanced economies assembling to tackle pressing global challenges. High on the agenda are trade tensions, the protracted wars in Ukraine and Gaza, climate action, and economic recovery. However, an unspoken but looming topic for many in attendance is how to navigate the geopolitical landscape in the shadow of Donald Trump’s expected return to the U.S. presidency.
This year’s summit features leaders from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan — along with European Union representatives. With global diplomacy being tested on multiple fronts, the tone is expected to be one of cautious cooperation. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the host, emphasized the need for “unity over division” in his opening remarks.
Behind closed doors, sources say some European leaders are concerned about the possibility of Trump undermining NATO and reversing climate commitments if he wins the 2024 U.S. election. As a result, many nations are adopting a “wait and see” approach, trying not to provoke the former U.S. president while shoring up multilateral agreements in the meantime.
Trade disputes, particularly involving China and digital regulations, remain central to the discussions. France and Germany are pushing for stricter digital sovereignty, while the U.S. and Japan advocate for freer technology flow. Meanwhile, tensions over the Israel-Gaza war have split opinions, with leaders divided on how best to push for a ceasefire and humanitarian relief.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to address the summit virtually to request additional military aid and reaffirm international support for his country amid continued Russian aggression.
Climate change is also set to dominate discussions, with European countries demanding faster action and accountability, especially from major carbon emitters. However, with looming elections in several G7 countries, including the U.S., policy continuity remains uncertain.
As the summit progresses over the next two days, all eyes are on whether the G7 can present a united front — not just to the world, but to an increasingly divided West navigating post-pandemic challenges, inflation, war, and the specter of political upheaval.
